Six months later...

Six months ago today, Geekocracy went live. How quickly has that gone?!

I'm incredibly proud of this wee corner of the internet we have together. It's by no means a big blog - we've had just over 20,000 views, which is probably pitiful compared to others. To me though, that number is insane. People have put their eyes on our blog twenty thousand times.

But while the views are wonderful, and I appreciate every single one, that isn't what makes me so happy about running the blog: it's the posts, and the people who write. Every post is different and fantastic, and every writer has their own style. I don't tell people what to write about, and nobody is limited to any one topic. It's all very laid back.

However.

The post that goes up today has made me think a lot. It begins with 'I don't think I can write for Geekocracy ... I just don't know if I'm geeky enough.' It's a really lovely post about the geek community and not fitting in. It's honest, and very real. Then I began to wonder... was having 'geek' in our name a mistake?

I met the majority of our writers through either the Geek and Sundry community, or the International Geek Girl Pen Pal Club. The topics we write about are, in general, considered to be geeky topics. So, it seemed like the obvious step to take when deciding to start a blog with everyone: to make it a 'geek blog'.

I just hope the name doesn't make people feel like they can't be involved if they don't consider themselves to be particularly geeky.

I like a lot of things, things like reading and science and games; I'm no expert, but I want to write about them. And that's what I want Geekocracy to be about: people writing about what they enjoy, whatever it is, because they love it, or are interested in it, and want to share what they know, or their thoughts and opinions. I'm never going to ask someone to be more 'geeky' about what they write.

So! That being said... I also wanted to say a huge thanks to everybody, the readers and the writers. The amount of work people have put into Geekocracy - either by writing, or commenting, or spreading the word - completely overwhelms me. I've met some really fantastic friends, I've learned a lot from everyone, and I'm finally finding the time to read more, thanks to Literally Geeky.

Here's to another six months! But then that's IT.

... Not really.
